WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools)
Clean Water. Better Health. Brighter Futures.
At WE REACH, we collaborate with the Ministry of Health and Education in developing education materials for sensitization on WASH and provide oversight and monitoring of WASH standards in schools.
1. Empowering the Next Generation
We don't just build facilities; we build habits. Through our School WASH Empowerment initiative, we:
Established and 87 mentor School Health Clubs to lead peer-to-peer training.
Provided comprehensive Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) support to keep girls in 87 schools.
Delivered an interactive hygiene education that has reduced water-borne diseases by up to 80%.
2. Reliable Water Supply & Quality
Clean water is the foundation of a healthy school. We ensure every child has access to safe drinking water by:
Installed Rainwater Harvesting Systems and tanks in 15 schools
3. Dignified Sanitation Facilities
Privacy and safety are human rights. We upgrade school infrastructure to meet international standards by:
Installed 150 Handwashing Stations at key locations in 75 schools.
Trained 87 schools on soap making, which they use in handwashing
Governance and Reproductive Health and rights
Breaking Barriers. Building Accountability.
At WE REACH, we meet the youth where they are on the field. By combining the power of sports with health advocacy, we are dismantling the taboos surrounding Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
1. Breaking Barriers Through Sport
The "Kick-Off" Education Model: Used football tournaments to reach over 15,000 youth with vital SRHR information, transforming the pitch into a safe space for dialogue on HIV prevention, contraception, and consent.
Overcoming Cultural Taboos: Successfully engaged 350 community elders and religious leaders through "Sports for Health" galas, reducing social stigma and increasing youth access to local clinics.
Peer-Led Coaching: Trained 245 youth coaches as "Health Mentors" who provide ongoing SRHR counseling and referrals to their players, ensuring support continues long after the final whistle.
2. Strengthening Social Accountability
Community Watch Groups: Established youth-led "Accountability Committees" that track the availability of reproductive health supplies (such as contraceptives kits) at local health facilities.
Budget Advocacy: Empowered more than 400 community members through the Kakamega Community of Practice network to participate in public budget hearings, ensuring that Reproductive Health remains a priority in local government resource allocation.
The "Health Scorecard": Developed and implemented a community-led scorecard system to rate the "Youth-Friendliness" of local clinics, leading to improved service delivery in 8 partner facilities.
3. Innovative Youth Leadership
Digital Integration: Launched a youth-friendly SMS/WhatsApp help-desk that provides confidential SRHR information and links youth to football-based outreach events.
Entrepreneurial Health: Integrated basic financial literacy into our sports programs, helping 344 youth become self-reliant, which reduces the economic vulnerability that often leads to poor SRHR outcomes.
Gender Justice
Ending Exploitation. Restoring Visibility. Empowering Survivors.
At WE REACH, we don’t just discuss gender equality; we deliver measurable results. We have moved women and girls from the margins of society to the center of community leadership.
1. Systematic Prevention & Visibility
Identification Milestone: Successfully trained 150 Community Frontliners who now actively identify and report cases of domestic servitude and human trafficking that were previously "invisible."
Informed Communities: Reached over 500 households with the "Not Invisible Anymore" safety protocols, resulting in a 45% increase in the use of safe migration channels within the county.
2. Survivor Restoration & Legal Accountability
Holistic Recovery: Facilitated the trauma-informed rehabilitation of 200 survivors of forced labor and SGBV, providing a 100% success rate in linking them to safe housing and psychosocial care.
444 survivors back into their communities, not as victims, but as "Peer Mentors" who now lead local advocacy efforts.
3. Economic Freedom & Resilience (Social Enterprise)
Dependency Broken: Moved 444 women out of high-risk economic vulnerability through our seed-funding initiative, distributing over Ksh 50,000 in business start-up kits.
Sustainable Table Banking: Mentored 25 self-help groups that have collectively saved over Ksh 250,000, creating a community-owned emergency fund that prevents debt-bondage and re-exploitation.
Market Leadership: Facilitated the growth of 330 women-led micro-enterprises, ensuring survivors have a permanent, dignified income that secures their household's future.
Climate Action
Turning Waste into Wealth. Powering Organic Farming.
At WE REACH, we utilize Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology as a cornerstone of our regenerative farming model. By converting organic waste into high-protein animal feed and premium organic fertilizer, we are lowering costs for farmers and reducing the environmental impact of school and market waste.
1. Sustainable Waste Conversion
We turn community waste problems into agricultural solutions:
Waste Upcycling: Successfully diverted 15 tons of organic waste from homes and local markets, utilizing BSF larvae to convert it into nutrient-rich organic matter.
Methane Reduction: By processing organic waste through BSF rather than letting it decompose in pits, we have significantly reduced methane emissions, contributing to local climate mitigation goals.
2. Affordable Protein for Agribusiness
We solve the "high cost of feed" challenge for youth and survivor entrepreneurs:
Alternative Animal Feed: Produced over 1000 kg of high-protein BSF larvae, providing a sustainable and low-cost alternative to expensive commercial soy and fishmeal for poultry and fish farming.
Cost Reduction: Helped survivor-led poultry farms reduce their feed expenses by 70%, directly increasing their household profits and economic independence.
3. Organic Fertilizer (Frass) Production
Our BSF systems create a "closed-loop" for our regenerative farms:
Organic Soil Boost: Produced 15 tons of "Frass" (BSF waste), a premium organic fertilizer that has been distributed to our GBV survivor farmers to improve soil health and crop yields.
Chemical-Free Farming: Enabled 400 farmers to transition entirely away from expensive chemical fertilizers, promoting healthier food systems and protecting local water sources.
Mental Health Awareness
Resilient Minds. Stronger Communities.
At WE REACH, we believe that mental wellness is the foundation of all success. By combining evidence-based wellness strategies with the community power of sports, we are breaking the stigma and giving youth the emotional tools they need to thrive in school and life.
1. Large-Scale School Wellness Outreach
We have successfully implemented evidence-based psychological interventions to improve the emotional resilience of students:
Massive Impact: Reached over 6,000 students across local schools with a proven wellness strategy that focuses on gratitude, growth mindset, and value-based living.
Academic & Emotional Balance: Documented a significant improvement in student focus and a reduction in school-related anxiety, directly contributing to better academic performance and retention.
Teacher Mentorship: Trained school staff to identify early warning signs of mental distress, ensuring that the 6,000+ students have a continuous support system within the classroom.
2. Sports-Based Mental Health Advocacy
We take mental health support out of the clinic and onto the pitch, making it accessible and stigma-free:
The "Mental Health Match": Utilized football tournaments to reach "at-risk" youth, using half-time sessions and team huddles to conduct group counseling and wellness workshops.
Breaking the Stigma: Transformed local football clubs into "Safe Zones" where young men and women feel comfortable discussing depression, anxiety, and trauma without fear of judgment.
Peer Support Networks: Trained team captains and coaches as "Mental Health First-Aiders," creating a grassroots network that provides immediate emotional support to peers during and after sports activities.
